After the New York Giants dramatic win over the New England Patriots on Sunday night, we teamed up with the recently crowned Super Bowl Champs to create an app that allowed Giants fans to celebrate their victory on Facebook and Twitter!

The app allowed users to overlay their profile pictures with a special Super Bowl XLVI champions badge to celebrate their team's victory. The Giants changed the front page of their website to the app itself (!) so that any fan going to their page could instantly show their support.

Within minutes of the win there was an incredible response from fans, with Twibbons being added at an incredible 6 a second! In total an amazing 34,211 people added the Twibbon to either their Twitter or Facebook avatar.

The update on the Giants Facebook page below which encouraged fans to add the Twibbon, was inundated with comments and praise.

We at Storm Ideas (the creators of Twibbon) don’t like to blow our trumpet very often but in this instance we just can’t help ourselves!

The Social Media Society has announced their shortlist for the Social Media Influencers Award for 2012 and we are in the running for the A is Everywhere Facebook App which we were asked to develop with ABC Family for their programme Pretty Little Liars! 

The application was a contest to find the letter 'A' wherever possible, whether in the clouds, in a reflection, or even in their cereal! Entrants had to then take a picture and send in for a chance to win the prize of a visit to the Pretty Little Liars set.

The competition was a huge success with almost 500,000 people taking part, and will go down as one of the most fun and popular apps we have ever worked on!

On the 23rd of January, Wikipedia, Reddit and other major websites made the unprecedented move of blacking out their entire sites. The motive was protesting against SOPA - Stop Online Piracy Act - and PIPA - Protect IP Act - which are US House and Senate bills respectively that wants to give content holders far-reaching new powers to block websites in the name of copyright protection.

In response to SOPA, Twibbon users launched their own protest.

As the movement began to gather momentum, over 74 Twibbon campaigns were created to support this:

In total so far over 100,000 people have added an anti-SOPA or PIPA Twibbon – the most popular being this campaign with over 67,000 supporters!

On the 10th of January the boys put a video on their US concert website with number 6 of their famous challenges asking fans to use Twibbon to show which city they want One Direction to visit on their American tour in February.

Within minutes of that video going up Twibbon was buzzing with fans from Atlanta, New York, Dallas, LA, Miami, San Francisco, Seattle and DC vying to add as many Twibbons as they could and show the boys how much they wanted to see them in their hometown!

ITV’s ever popular Dancing on Ice skated its way back onto our TVs last weekend, and with it the annual campaign that allows you to support your favourite celeb with a Twibbon!

All the celebrity skaters have been freezing their feet off practising to get ready for the series and they are all lined up for you on Twibbon to support from the comfort of your web browser.

With Twitter announcing the definitive list of trends over 2011, we thought it would be a good time to relive the year that’s come and gone (quicker than a speeding bullet!) here at Twibbon Towers and reveal the 10 most popular Twibbons of the past 12 months.

Scrolling down, you’ll see what an assorted lot they are. Chances are if you’re reading this, you’ll have come across at least some of these on Twitter or Facebook, or maybe you’ve worn one yourself! Let us know in the comments section below!

 

10)  Todos Iguales (All Equal) - 27,000 Supporters

Todos Iguales was a Chilean campaign for equal rights in diversity and was used to encourage and organise demonstrators to march for this cause. It got a superb 27,000 supporters overall and most of them in its first week! The Twibbon itself was a very cool cut out design which put a twist on the normal overlay style.

 

9)  NOH8 - 29,000

The now famous NOH8 campaign, currently in its third year, was set up as a direct response to the passage of Proposition 8. This movement is all about building awareness through great photography and a compelling social media presence. Their Twibbon campaign was used to great effect as an instrument to aid them in this.

 

8)  Stand with Israel - 31,000

One of our most contentious, yet massively supported, campaigns. The Stand with Israel Twibbon, made for the controversial American TV host Glenn Beck, was successful in getting everybody hot under the collar and provoking much discussion both on Twitter and Facebook. 

 

7)  Purple Glasses - 32,000

Justin Bieber’s fan club made a simple, identifiable Purple Glasses Twibbon to echo Bieber's 2011 movie, as well as the hashtag #purpleglasses to spread awareness across Twitter. They also promoted the Twibbon on the movie's official website.

 

6)  Pray for Japan - 41,000

After the March 11 Japanese earthquake and tsunami, people around the world wanted to reach out to those affected. The Twibbon Pray for Japan was added by almost 42,000 of our users. The hashtag #Japan was one of Twitter’s top ten hashtags of the year and it was also the most shared story on Facebook.

 

5)  Love Always - 42,000

Created by @UNAIDS , the aim of this campaign was to promote love and understanding for those with HIV and AIDS in the Asia and Pacific region. An incredible 20,000 supporters added the Twibbon in the first day! This was due in part to the three members of pop band JYJ - Jae joong, Yoochan and Jun su - all tweeting messages of support from their personal Twitter accounts, grabbing the interest of their collective 1.4 million followers on Twitter.

 

4)  2011 Proud to be a Thomasian - 44,000

As the oldest university in Asia and the largest Catholic university in the world, the University of St Tomas had an incredibly successful campaign this year commemorating its Grand Quadricentennial. Students old and new got involved pushing the total supporters up to an incredible 44,000.  

 

3)  #SpiritDay - 47,000

In October 2010, GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) created a Custom Campaign for their Spirit Day, which remembers those teens who took their lives in the face of homophobic bullying.

This year again the cause was hugely popular, as over 47,000 people added the distinct purple overlay to their Twitter and Facebook profile pictures.

 

2)  Delete Digital Drama - 82,000

We teamed up with popular television network, ABC Family, and America’s leading teen magazine, Seventeen, in July to harness the viral power of social media for good in a bid to stamp out cyberbullying. 

In only 2 weeks, an incredible 82,000 people had pledged their support for the campaign by adding the official Digital Drama Twibbon to their Twitter or Facebook profiles. The mass popularity has led to the campaign being one of the fastest growing of all time. 

 

1)  Norway - 106,000

Norway

The July shootings and bombing in Norway prompted our most supported Twibbon this year. Over 106,000 users from around the globe added the simple but effective Norway flag to show solidarity with the country in the aftermath of the tragedy.

One question frequently asked by Twitter users (especially those new to Twibbon) relates to removing their Twibbons once a campaign is over. It is actually a very simple process.

This step-by-step guide to removing your Twibbon should tell you everything you need to know. There are two methods to do this:

1. Using Twibbon.com to change your Twitter profile image

  • Navigate to the Twibbon homepage (twibbon.com)
  • If you are signed in, click the ‘My Profile’ link at the top of the page.

  • Once on the “My Profile” page, you will see the toolbar highlighted in red below:

  • Select the “My History” tab on the right. From here you will see a grid of all the profile pictures that you have had since joining Twibbon. Select the image you want as your Twitter avatar from the history panel, and click on the word ‘Revert’ – not the image itself. That’s it!

P.S. It can take Twitter a while to update your profile picture after you’ve Twibbonised it! Please wait 24 hours after removing a Twibbon for Twitter to update. 2. Re-upload your profile picture to Twitter

You can also remove your Twibbon by re-uploading your original picture (or a brand new one) onto Twitter and then visit twibbon.com to support a different cause.

  • This method requires you to go to your Twitter profile page and click on ‘Edit Your Profile’ underneath your picture. This automatically takes you to your settings page and onto your profile tab.

It’s poppy time again on Twibbon and that means a great way to recognise the sacrifice of all those who have given and who continue to give their lives so that we can all live in a free society. You can see below the fantastic Twibute made from 15,000 of the RBL Twibbon supporters.

This year we had no fewer than 39 poppy campaigns remembering the fallen of both World Wars and in the past month an over 100,000 have added the online poppy to their profile picture.

Our most popular poppy Twibbons this year are Canada Remembers, Remembrance Day Poppy, and the Official Royal British Legion Poppy - which amassed tens of thousands of supporters since the beginning of October .

The campaigns were helped along with some well known names choosing to support the causes, including ex-British Prime Minister Tony Blair, London Mayor Boris Johnson Labour Party leader Ed Miliband, his politician brother David Miliband, and former England rugby player Will Carling.

October is customarily the month on Twibbon when we like to go pink to help raise Breast Cancer Awareness and this year was no exception. With no fewer than 102 campaigns relating to breast cancer we feel very proud of our followers and fans in raising awareness of this terrible disease.

Big sporting events are a real staple of Twibbon campaigns and the Rugby World Cup battle between Wales and France last weekend brought out the patriot in the Welsh fans, prompting our Custom Campaign of the week.

The simply titled I Believe was created by the BBC Wales Scrum V Team, who wanted to focus and galvanise Welsh fans from all over the world to "Back the Boys". Unfortunately, on the day Wales controversially just missed out on a win but the "I Believe" ethos is still alive!

WSPA - the World Society for the Protection of Animals - is a global organisation that works in many different countries and with many different languages. Therefore they took their “Collars not Cruelty” initiative (which is against dogs being needlessly put to death in a misguided attempt to eradicate rabies) and made a Custom Campaign for each region that they operate in.

Since the campaign began just over two weeks ago, the combined supporters of all the campaigns has risen to an astonishing 12,000!

As more people add a Twibbon, the more they participate with and involve themselves in a cause. Here is what some supporters were saying about the Collars not Cruelty campaign:-

Because this was a Custom Campaign and not just a free one, WSPA were able to access additional tools to increase their Facebook Likes.

Their 13 different Facebook Pages increased by 20,000 likes, thanks to the Custom Campaign feature which asks users to “like” a page before they add a Twibbon, as well as the bonus that WSPA were able to promote their Facebook page on their Twibbon page.

September has come and gone in a blink, so let’s take our look back at the month's Twibbon highlights!

We started off in a sporty fashion with a Twibbon celebrating footballer Roger Ceni’s 1000th game as goalkeeper for Sao Paulo - which an amazing 10,000 of his fans added to their avatars.

Teaming up with ITV Rugby for this year's Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, we kicked off the  historic competition with some awesome-looking Twibbons for Rugby fans to add. We also launched Ultimate Fan; a bespoke Facebook app for ITV where fans can prove their loyalty by earning points for supporting their team -  keep your eyes out for a blog post dedicated to this exciting collaboration soon!

After Twibbon was taken over by ABC and Seventeen magazine in July in a bid to stamp out cyberbulling, a nice coda to the campaign was this stunning mosaic, generated from all of the avatars of those who had added the Twibbon on Twitter and Facebook.

We also had a couple of famous dates in September: Google became a teenager on the 27th of the month:

And the still hugely popular author Roald Dahl - who has a special day set aside for celebration - was commemorated on the 13th. His fans were keen to share with us their favourite Roald Dahl book!

The anniversary of 9/11 engendered the popular campaign Flag 911 - which we blogged about more fully here - and made International day of Peace being held this month all the more poignant.

Our heart-warming Custom Campaign winner this week is Love Always. Created by UNAIDS, aim of this campaign was to promote love and understanding for those with HIV and AIDS in the Asia and Pacific region.

We kicked off August with a big birthday! MTV turned 30 years old on the 1st and we created a Twibbon to celebrate.  Controversially, when we asked the question "Did the internet kill the music video star?", the most people felt that MTV had done the damage to themselves by having too many reality shows and not enough music on it!

Musically there were nods to Lollapalooza - the Chicago music festival - with a fun Twibbon, and Elvis fans were out in force honouring his memory on the anniversary of his death.

India, South Korea and Indonesia all celebrated their Independence Days, with Indonesia getting huge numbers of supporters for several Twibbons, including Hut 66 Ri at 6,300 supporters. Korea were not far behind with 5,600 supporters, with India managing a respectable 1,600 supporters

The big news in Britain this month was the riots in England, with Twibboners staying positive and focussing on the clean-up in the aftermath. The campaign #riotwombles made a splash, as did the Twibbon for supporting those affected in London, Birmingham and elsewhere. 

Women’s Equality Day brought a bit of controversy, with some users pointing out that the day needed to exist in the first place showing that there is still some way to go before we reach total equality!

And last, but certainly not least, we can’t go without mentioning one of our fastest growing campaigns ever on Twibbon. With the hashtag #LoveAlways, this Twibbon asked supporters to unite against discrimination for HIV and Aids sufferers in Asia. Supported by the South Korean boy band JYJ, it soared in one day to an amazing 22,000 supporters and is at the time of writing at 34,000 supporters and climbing!

Planners and co-ordinators have quickly caught on to using Twibbon as an effective marketing tool, along with the customary adverts/Facebook pages/posters and so on.  Here is a look at some of the most successful event-led campaigns:

The Day of Silence Twibbon was created by @dayofsilence -  the organisers themselves -  to promote the day of action when students across the country would spend a day not speaking in order to raise awareness of the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying in schools – and gained a fantastic 5,300 supporters. Furthermore, because it was a Custom Campaign, all fans who added the Twibbon were automatically re-directed to the Day of Silence page, making it easy for them to see how to get involved.

The Crufts Twibbon was started by the famous dog competition for 2011, and garnered a healthy 900 Supporters.

Using the link to their Facebook fan page on their Twibbon page, Crufts increased their Facebook likes by 2,500 in just a month!

 

The Moonwalk London

The Moonwalk London Twibbon was initiated by Walk the Walk, the charity behind all the Moonwalks to encourage women to sign up for the event. The campaign proved  to be a huge success reaching 3,300 supporters. Taking advantage of the Custom Campaign's auto-follow feature, the creator managed to increase their Twitter followers, as you can see below from their Twitter follower stats:
