As 2012 draws to a close, both Facebook and Twitter have each announced their top trending stories with their year in review. So we decided it would be a good time to look back over the past 12 months here at Twibbon and reveal the 10 most popular Twibbons of the year.
Flicking through, you’ll see what a mixed bunch they are; you will probably have come across at least some of these on Twitter or Facebook, or maybe you’ve worn one yourself! Let us know in the comments section below!
In reverse order, the Top 10 Twibbon Campaigns of 2012 are:
10. Kuwait National Day - 26,756 supports
25th of February this year was the 51st national day of Kuwait. Kuwait gained full sovereignty and independence from the British Protectorate on June 19, 1961 but it celebrates its National Day on February 25 every year to commemorate the accession of H.H. Shaikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah as he is considered the architect of modern Kuwait. National day campaigns are quite well supported on Twibbon but this one, created by EnzoZid, topped the poll this year.
9. Santa Hat - 29,036 supports
Created by Scottish funny man Limmy your very favourite christmas decoration is the good old Santa Hat! With the exortation put this Santa Hat on your head and get into the Christmas Spirit which almost 30,000 of you have this year.
8. Marcha por la Igualdad (March for Equality) - 31,650 supports
Created by Movilh, a movement that promotes and defends the human rights of LGBT people in Chile the March for Equality took place in June to march for social justice and the human rights of people with sexual diversity.
7. Vote 1D BRITS - 31,650 supports
Award season was upon us in February when the latest One Direction campaign grabbed the imagination of its fans who were asked to wear the Twibbon to show they had voted for them in the BRIT Awards.
6. Special Needs - 36,741 supports
This simple Arabic Twibbon campaign created by Shahd_F asked for people to stand in unity and with empathy for those coping with special needs.
5. Puro Corazón (Pure Heart) - 39,291 supports
A Chilean National Television Association Telethon appeal that sought to raise funds for the rehabilitation of children with motor impairments. They raised over $53 million and almost 40,000 supports!
4. #SpiritDay – 41,212 supports
In October 2010, GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) created a Pro Campaign for their Spirit Day, which remembers those teens who took their lives in the face of homophobic bullying.
Once more this year, the campaign was hugely popular, as over 41,000 people added the distinct purple overlay to their Twitter and Facebook profile pictures.
3. Poppy Appeal - 65,755 supports
Poppies have always been very popular on Twibbon so when the Royal British Legion decided to make their own official Poppy campaign, supporters were not hard to find. They included a link to their donation site on their Pro Campaign page which helped direct sponsors to where they could easily give money to the cause.
2. Stop SOPA - 85,213 supports
On the 23rd of January, Wikipedia, Reddit and other major websites made the unprecedented move of blacking out their entire sites. The motive was protesting against SOPA - Stop Online Piracy Act - and PIPA - Protect IP Act - which are US House and Senate bills respectively that wants to give content holders far-reaching new powers to block websites in the name of copyright protection.
In response to SOPA, Twibbon users launched their own protest and over 74 campaigns were generated, this one created by collidecreative was the most popular.

Our most popular campaign of 2012 #syria was created by DrNawras in a reaction to the heightening violence and unrest in that country at the beginning of the year. With a simple yet powerful message of ‘Free Syria’ the campaign captured user’s hearts and minds and sought to show support for and solidarity with the people of Syria.
